Kami Wood Mug

CHF 79.00
sold out

An exquisite hand-made wooden mug made by a master woodworker and crafted by turning Hokkaido's "Sen" wood to a paper-like thickness of about 2 mm. This is incredibly hard to achieve and each mug takes up to 4 full weeks from rough lumber to final product.

Wood has a low thermal conductivity, so when you pour a hot drink, the temperature is slowly transmitted through the wood to your hands. This mug also keeps the drink hot as the wood works as a natural insulator.

It is light, easy to hold and hard to break. It offers a smooth, warm touch to your lips.

"Kami" means "paper" in Japanese and this is a reference to its delicate and sheer texture.

Tara’s note: This mug is a work of art and astonishing craftsmanship. It is the ultimate daily luxury if you enjoy quiet moments enjoying a brewed tea or coffee. It makes a marvellous gift and looks stunning in any kitchen or living setting.

  • Takahashi Crafts

Founded in Asahikawa in 1965 by Shoichi Takahashi, a turner. At the time of its founding, the company was engaged in furniture legs (decorative pillars). In the 1980s, as the demand for furniture was sluggish, he started producing potter's wheel cups and sugar pots. Takahashi Crafts produce simple and functional tableware mainly using tree species from Hokkaido. Starting with Kami glass, products that feature a modern appearance while making use of the texture of wood and naturally blend into modern lifestyles. Since 2009 Hidetoshi Takahashi has been the representative.

“Making a vessel entrusted with wood from the mountains of Hokkaido. It is a job that connects mountains and people. Connect the tree with the custodian from the mountain. And take care of the mountains and grow trees. Cutting down the right amount of trees allows the mountain to breathe and nurture young trees.

Wooden products bring a moment of relief to your life. The kindness that the soft and warm feel of a wooden vessel gives to a busy day. “
